Swayambhunath Stupa

Swayambhunath Stupa, also known as the Monkey Temple, is one of the oldest and most revered religious sites in Nepal. Located atop a hill in the Kathmandu Valley, it offers a panoramic view of the city and holds deep spiritual significance for both Buddhists and Hindus.

🕉️ Historical and Religious Importance

Swayambhunath is believed to have been established over 2,000 years ago. According to legend, the Kathmandu Valley was once a vast lake, and a lotus flower bloomed in its center. When the bodhisattva Manjushri drained the lake, the lotus settled on this hill, and Swayambhu (meaning "self-existent") emerged.

It is a sacred pilgrimage site for Tibetan Buddhists, Newar Buddhists, and also holds spiritual value for Hindus. The stupa represents the mind of the Buddha, and it is said to have the power to bless those who visit it with wisdom and enlightenment.

🏯 Architectural Features

The main stupa consists of a large white dome, symbolizing the world. Above the dome is a cube with the all-seeing eyes of Buddha painted on all four sides, signifying awareness and compassion. Between the eyes is a curly symbol representing the Nepali number "1", symbolizing unity.

Thirteen golden steps rise above the cube, representing the stages toward enlightenment. Around the stupa are shrines, prayer wheels, and statues of deities, including Harati (Ajima), a goddess believed to protect children.

🐒 The Monkeys

Swayambhunath is also called the Monkey Temple because of the large population of monkeys that roam freely around the hill. These monkeys are considered holy and are said to have been created by Manjushri when he let his hair grow long—lice from his hair are said to have transformed into the monkeys.

🌍 UNESCO World Heritage Site

In 1979, Swayambhunath was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Kathmandu Valley heritage complex. It is a symbol of harmony between different religions and is admired for its ancient architecture, peaceful atmosphere, and rich history.
